more reasons to vote for Barack Obama

In May of 2006 Barack Obama introduced a bill to the Senate that requires oil companies that made at least $1 billion in profits in the first quarter of 2006 to invest at least 1% of the their total reported first quarter 2006 profits into installing E-85 pumps. The bill was referred to the Committee on Energy and Natural Resources.

In January of 2007 Obama introduced a bill cited as the "Oil SENSE Act" to eliminate unnecessary tax breaks to the oil industry. A version of the bill was passed by House of Representatives in January 2007. The bill was referred to the Committee on Finance.

Taken from Obama's senate website: "Throughout his political career, Barack Obama has fought for open and honest government. As an Illinois State Senator, he helped pass the state’s first major ethics reform bill in 25 years. And as a U.S. Senator, he has spearheaded the effort to clean up Washington in the wake of numerous scandals.
In the first two weeks of the 110th Congress, Senator Obama helped lead the Senate to pass the Legislative Transparency and Accountability Act, a comprehensive ethics and lobbying reform bill, by a 96-2 vote.
The bill passed by the Senate closely mirrored a bill (S. 230) that Senators Obama and Feingold introduced in January 2007 to establish a “gold standard” for reform. Among the provisions in the Obama-Feingold bill that were adopted by the Senate were: strict bans on receiving gifts and meals from lobbyists; new rules to slow the revolving door between public and private sector service; and an end to the subsidized use of corporate jets.
Most importantly, the Senate-passed bill contained an Obama amendment to require the disclosure of contributions that registered lobbyists “bundle” – that is, collect or arrange – for candidates, leadership PACs, and party committees. The New York Times called this provision “the most sweeping” in the bill, and the Washington Post said: “No single change would add more to public understanding of how money really operates in Washington.” "

Its time for a change in our government. Its time for a president who doesn't have his/her hands in the pockets of the lobbying firms and giant corporatations. Its time for a president who is willing to introduce controversial laws to enact real change. Lets get Hillary out of the media spotlight and support a candidate who is not just another politician in the inner circles of DC.

So Obama wants to pick on big bad oil. What do you think would happen if Big Oil was forced to cough up 1 percent for Obama's pet project? Really? Do you think the owners of these companies, would eat the loss? No, they'll pass it on. Besides, how much would 10 million really buy in E85 pumps and the tanks they require to hold that type of fuel? One per state?
Same thing for those tax breaks you'd like to kill. I'm all for it, but I know I'll pay more at the pumps if and when that happens.
E85 time hasn't come yet. The US consumer is still buying up those SUVs like gas was a buck a gallon.
Maybe when gas hits western Europes' prices will the view shift to more efficient cars. But in the meantime, it really isn't hopeful for Obama to put out stuff like that as it's not well thought out.

Mike you're an idiot. He's bi-racial. Just b/c he attends a black church doesn't mean he's a separatist. Read his memoir. Why on earth would electing another WASP help the separatism in this country? Does Hillary have any military experience? Rudy Giuliani? Mitt Romney? John Edwards? Nope, nope, nope again, and well, no. Again, read his memoir, you will see he is more than qualified to lead this country.

anon, you're probably right, the cost of gas might go up, but at least it would be to the benefit of the future, not just for record profits of the oil industry.

So are you for or against gas costs going up?
The oil industry is already charging us for the E85 initiatives, Bush's call for a 20% drop in future gasoline use has prompted the oil industry to start making the shift to biofuels. Obama's plan would just make it law.

Hi Melissa...re:big oils profits. That's the thing, they will jack up the prices to cover any shortfall. It's not that they're evil or anything, it what the owners expect. (Remember you or someone you know might be invested in one of these companies and are counting on them to make you some money.)
As for cutting 20 percent, that around 30 billion gallons of gas a year. How much corn will the US have to grow to fill that quota? And how will the food supply change if so much corn is used to fuel instead food? How how much more will it cost to convert corn or any other renewable matter into E85? (I ask this because as I understand it, it costs more to make the current ethanol gas that than what they charge for it, and the government/you are paying for it via taxes.) This gets all back to thinking this through first.
Melissa, I don't have the answers. My gut though, says that we need to get into smaller cars with the sewing machine engines. Is the US ready for that? It'll be hard to convince a soccer mom driving her Hummer that she needs to downsize, but that'll have to happen.

    re: anon big oil profits

you're right that prices will go up if we switch to bio-fuels. but they're going to go up regardless. china and india are using more gasoline than ever before, and will continue to do so as their economies expands. Demand will rise thus will costs.
"The major issue here is "that you go from 79 million barrels a day in 2002 to 84.5 million in 2004. You're leaping by two to three million barrels a day" each year. That's like a whole new Saudi Arabia every couple of years. It can't be done indefinitely," former senior Aramco executive Al-Huseini commented. "

So whats the plan, do we wait around until the supply is stretched so thin that we have more wars over oil and spend more money on gasoline? Or do we make the switch now, cut our dependence on OPEC and give the money instead to our farmers?
It isn't just corn that will be used for E-85, there are a number of other resources, and more are being discovered all the time.
This article discusses switchgrass as an alternative to corn.
Brazil has successfully integrated biofuels into its mainstream fuel use
"Thanks to an investment spanning 30 years, Brazil now boasts it is capable of complete energy independence. The rise of ethanol has also been a boon for the nation's sugar cane farmers Brazil's ethanol is derived directly from sugar rather than from corn, as it is in the Midwest."
Additionally.. "A variety of highly valued feed co-products, including gluten meal, gluten feed and dried distillers grains, are produced from the remaining protein, minerals, vitamins and fiber and are sold as high-value feed for livestock. In addition to grain, ethanol is also produced today from wood waste, cheese whey, waste sucrose, potato waste, brewery waste, and food and beverage wastes."
The more money we invest in bio-fuel conversion, the better it will be. Scientists will continue to find more efficient ways to produce it and our nation will benefit.

oh yeah, smaller cars. im all for smaller cars, in older posts that i have yet to transfer to this blog, i go on and on about my loathing of SUVs. the smaller ones built on car frames don't bother me, but I see no reason soccer moms need to drive suburbans or expeditions to transfer their 2.5 kids to soccer/gymnastics/karate/music/horse/lessons lessons lessons. somehow my parents got by with a toyota station-wagon.
not to mention, SUVs are so aggravating to be behind on the road. I drive a camry and if I am behind an SUV I cannot see the traffic ahead of it, if it is next to me I cannot see oncoming traffic, and after living in a college town I have observed that the majority of SUV drivers are blonde sorority girls with cellphones glued to their head, nearly sideswiping everyone around them. almost every SUV i see on the road has 1 tiny woman driving it and no passengers. they aren't bought for convenience, they're bought for status.
